In writer/director Mário Peixoto’s first and only film, three castaways trade stories of their past lives while adrift on a lifeboat off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Out on these endless seas, magical dissolves and landscape detours take us into the collective dreamscape of these troubled souls lost between past and future, water and earth, life and death. Barely seen and appreciated when first released in 1931, the single print of LIMITE was traded among cinephile cultists and film societies until it was on the verge of destruction. Before its restoration, it was more myth than movie, aided by director Peixoto’s fabulist tendencies. Yet the real movie is even better than the movie dreamed from hearsay, exaggerations, memories, and writing: it’s a strange and personal art object, both playful reverie and melancholy nightmare.
